Polymarket is accessible in Greece — the platform does not geoblock Greek IP addresses. As an EU member, Greece sits under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, giving traders a regulated exchange environment and easy EUR on-ramps through SEPA bank transfers. Here’s what Greek users need to know about using Polymarket.
Current Status: Accessible
Greece is not on Polymarket’s geoblocked countries list. The platform is fully accessible from Greek IP addresses. Greek users can sign up, deposit, and trade on all available markets.
Greece’s crypto adoption is steady but moderate — cryptoActivity in the country has been growing since the early 2020s, supported by EU-wide regulatory clarity under MiCA. Long-standing local banks such as Piraeus and National Bank of Greece operate alongside a vibrant European exchange market. Because Greece uses the euro, there is no currency conversion step when funding a euro-denominated exchange account.
The legal landscape for prediction markets in Greece sits in a grey area. Online gambling is licensed and tightly regulated, but decentralized, crypto-based prediction platforms like Polymarket fall outside the explicit scope of the gambling framework. There is no record of enforcement against Greek Polymarket users.
The Legal Landscape
The Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC) & MiCA
Greece is subject to the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), Regulation (EU) 2023/1114, which came into application on 30 December 2024. The Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC) is the competent authority for licensing and supervising Crypto-Asset Service Providers (CASPs) in Greece.
- MiCA provides a harmonised EU rulebook for crypto-assets not already covered by existing financial-instruments law
- Companies based in Greece that provide crypto services must be authorised by the HCMC as CASPs
- Stablecoins such as USDC are treated under MiCA’s Electronic Money Token (EMT) / Asset-Referenced Token rules
- The Commission established the Greek CASP licensing procedure by Decision 8/1059/30.07.2025
For individual traders, MiCA mainly affects the platforms they use — it ensures the exchanges operating in Greece are licensed and meet EU standards, without restricting Greeks from buying or selling crypto.
The Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP) & Gambling Law
Online gambling in Greece is regulated by the Hellenic Gaming Commission (also known as EEEP or HGC) under Greece’s gambling legislation, including the framework built around Law 4002/2011 on the organisation and operation of betting games. Operators must hold a licence, and the Commission oversees licensed online betting, gaming, and enforcement against unlicensed operators.
Prediction markets specifically are not addressed by this gambling law. Decentralized, crypto-based platforms like Polymarket fall into a gap between the financial-asset framework (MiCA) and the licensed gambling framework — an unregulated area for participants rather than operators.
How to Deposit from Greece
Greece uses the euro, and EU-regulated European exchanges provide straightforward EUR-to-USDC on-ramps via SEPA. MiCA compliance means the exchanges below are supervised within the EU.
Step 1: Buy USDC on a Local Exchange
| Exchange | SEPA Support | Card Payments | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitpanda | Yes (SEPA Instant) | Yes | EU-regulated; strong EUR support with instant deposits |
| Crypto.com | Yes | Yes | Large global app with EUR and USDC support |
| OKX | Yes | Yes | Deep liquidity; EUR and USDC pairs |
| Bitstamp | Yes | Yes | EU-regulated exchange with mature EUR rails |
Deposit Methods Explained
SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area): SEPA is the standard euro-denominated bank transfer across the EU. You can fund your exchange account from any Greek bank by initiating a SEPA transfer. Many European exchanges also support SEPA Instant, which credits funds within seconds. This is the recommended deposit method.
Card Payments: Most of the above exchanges accept Visa and Mastercard debit/credit cards for EUR purchases, often with higher fees than bank transfers but for smaller, quicker top-ups.
Which Exchange? As of mid-2026 some global exchanges have wound down EU-facing services, so it is safest to use MiCA-licensed EU exchanges. Bitpanda gives a good balance of low SEPA-instant fees and a straightforward EUR-to-USDC path.
Step 2: Transfer USDC to Polymarket
- Go to Deposit on Polymarket
- Select Use Crypto and copy your deposit address
- Send USDC from your exchange to the Polymarket address
- Choose Polygon for the lowest fees ($3 minimum, arrives in seconds)

Tax Implications
Greece’s crypto tax rules are still taking shape. Historically, Greek law contained no specific provisions on the taxation of cryptocurrencies, and gains were generally treated under the general income-tax framework.
Proposed Capital Gains Tax
In June 2026 the Greek government began preparing legislation to introduce a flat 15% capital gains tax on crypto:
- Applies to net profits from selling digital assets
- Reported to apply retroactively from 1 January 2025
- Includes a de minimis threshold around €500 on gains below which tax does not apply
- Losses may offset gains in some cases
Importantly, at the time of writing this legislation was still a draft / in preparation and had not yet been finalised — the rate is proposed at 15%, but the framework was pending.
Reporting
- Tax is self-assessed and self-reported — there is no withholding at source on overseas, decentralized platforms
- Under the 2025 MiCA/CASP rules, licensed exchanges share data, improving practical enforcement
- Keep detailed records of deposits, trades, withdrawals, and EUR conversion rates
What You Don’t Pay
- No crypto-specific surcharge beyond the proposed capital gains treatment
- USDC held but not sold is generally not a taxable event
- No VAT applies to crypto-to-crypto transactions for individuals
